Hello. I am going to dual boot a new toshiba laptop. its got the dual amd 1600 procesors 500GB harddrive and 4 Gb ram. I would like to install fedora and make it a dual boot. the easy bootloader isnt to much of a problem. the hard part is the 4 nfts primary partitions that windows likes but apparently linux stuff doesnt. what has been explained to me is that if I alter the nfts partitions I wont be able to use my restore discs to restore windows. I know its possible just dont know how...yet. I have gparted and pmagic ready to go but just not sure how to do it.so experience is kicking in here and asking for help first.I dont have internet so do the wifi cafe bit. well thats the basic idea, any questions or suggestions let me know.and thanks in advance.

how to deal with nfts partitions so you can dual boot. Empty will check it out

the problem with replacing a partition is that windows is storing stuff in those partitions and if you move it windows will get lost trying to find the info on the partition that isnt there any more. I have a couple of guys that have a clue but they are not sure how. one guys hobby is to take linux os's apart and redo them to his liking. the only program he uses is an mp3 player so the rest of the os is no good to him and he really doesnt like windows so he would rather install linux instead of both. I am slowly finding out how to use programs other than games so want an os that will do everything. without having to keep control of it with a whip. a cute story about my xwife always wanting her xp. i was running fedora and she never said anything just did what she wanted. I got curious about some other stuff and installed xp again to make her happy. well suddenly she is asking why its doing this and that and why wont it do what I wanted like before, well dear you wanted xp. no complaints with fedora, it just worked. thats why I want it again.any way thank you for the referal i will eventually do this and let you know what I did and how it worked.

how to deal with nfts partitions so you can dual boot. Empty some intersesting ways to fix a problem

Post  onelongfire Sun Jan 15, 2012 9:09 pm

OK dynamite is first but I found out something about windows licenses. If I try to dual boot in a fresh from store install I will lose some info on one of the nfts partitions so its no good. the interesting thing is that I am going to download win7 from somewhere and since i already have a win7 license it should install. but before that I will partition the hard drive to do both. then I get a fresh install of windows and fedora. now all I have to do is get a TB hard drive to back up my files on.has anybody else tried this and if so what happened?

well I did it. but there is problems. I had a total of 8 linux versions plus windows sys7 and windows ultimate. the linuxs were vector, puppy, soluki, fatdog, ultimate, ultimate gamers, slackware and I tried others. fedora kept fighting with grub bootloader so couldnt include it.thanks kaddy for the help but the problems go way deeper. think conspiracy theory from windows ,toshiba, and the linux distros themselves. we are still working on it but with the huge pile of help and suggestions I got well I am not going to tell you how we did it. I suppose I should be grateful I got no flames but only 1 suggestion? thank you kaddy it did help. I like linux because when I started I got lots of good advice from lots of people. I am self taught at most things so here I go again . well thats it for now if you really are curios post something. i check when I can but one of my problems is no internet connection. thats all for now bye.

I had the nearly the same issue when I wanted to install Linux Mint Debian on my laptop.
There are a few things you need to know about those primary partitions which Windows uses.

1. The first partition is most likely PQSERVICE, which is used to restore Windows completely or just restore the "Windows" folder. You can use the tools that are included by the manufacturer with your Windows to create recovery discs, then you can safely delete this partition if you wish, but if you still use Windows, it's not recommanded.
2. Second partition will be SYSTEM RESERVED which is used by Windows Vista and Windows 7. This is the place where Windows stores files that are required for the computer to boot; just like the /boot partition in Linux. The difference is, you don't have access to it normally. You shouldn't delete this partition if you're using Windows.
3. Third one is the main Windows partition where all other files and folders such as "Program Files" and "Windows" folders are stored.

Normally there's no other primary partition, until you've created another partition yourself, no matter logical or primary. That's because all logical partitions are included in a primary partition called EXTENDED.
Now for installing Linux, you do not need to install it on a primary partition. just use gparted to free some space for the two root and swap partitions. Then you can go ahead and install your Linux distro on the root partition. Or if you so wish, you can replace your Windows with Linux. Just note this, if you went ahead and replaced your Windows with Linux, you should NOT boot your computer to the PQSERVICE partition or recovery discs you created for restoring Windows; because when they detect a file system else than NTFS on the partition which Windows used to be, they'll format the partition to NTFS, and that will say goodbye to your Linux.

Hope this helps ya!

how to deal with nfts partitions so you can dual boot. Empty fun with distros,

Post  onelongfire Tue Mar 06, 2012 7:57 pm

thanks for the description of the windows partitions. we have been trying to figure out how to do it. what i have done is downloaded a sys7premium and sys7 ultimate. I can use my serial number with the sys7premium and I got a crack for the ultimate. the problem is toshiba isnt that friendly with linux. on one distro the video drivers dont work on another the wireless driver doesnt and some dont allow me to use head phones. the problem is is that this chipset is to new. and linux hasnt caught up yet. the new 3 kernels are starting to work but not yet. one of the things we are trying is i got a 2 TB usb drive and we installed some to it, but this comp will boot off my 4gb stick but not off f work.my 2tb hdd. so we are now using plop and grub4dos to make stuff work.vector seems most promising but no wireless driver. we might port a driver from gparted as it has the 3.26 kernel but at the wireless cafe today it was sporodic. sometimes fatdog connects sometimes not. another proble, is with my logitech unifying mouse and keyboard.some distros see and use it some dont. what it comes down to is i paid $300. for a new computer that only likes windows. but like all computer masochists I will whip my computer into shape and make it do what I want not what some programmer thinks I want. I got a clue so i am dangerous. the reason I keep at this is my buddy who is helping me hates all the work but its a puzzle he is determined to solve. and I could never just leave something alone. next will be adding macos10 to the line up. just think a cheap laptop running windows ,linux ,and OS10. theres a punny joke there somewhere. next I have to start learning how to use programs like gimp, openoffice, photo applications and maybe make my own webpage of miscellany.we havent got to the end yet but we will. finding out what the partiotions are is going to help us decide on our next plan of attack.thanks winonuX.

Well if the laptop and hardware are pretty new, I guess you would have to use a Linux distro with the latest kernel. It would be a good option if you choose a rolling release distro, so it constantly gets updated with the newest kernel and drivers. You can try these ones: Fuduntu, ZevenOS Neptune, Aptosid (highly unstable), Sabayon, Chakra (half rolling release), Linux Mint Debian Edition. You can also try the latest Ubuntu which is 12.04, but it's in beta. You should read the documentation of each on you choose, because they have unique ways of updating the system and installing new software.
