hi JoshwaJustify
welcome!

Yeah I got the PERFECT solution for you................

.........
.............
...........................

Install Xfce or Lxde or E17 or Openbox and Wallah!
lol

nar... in all seriousness.... I don't know any ways you can improve the speed of unity... it is early in development still... and needs alot of improvements.... maybe 12.04 will improve the peformance....... Have you tried installing the latest Unity 5.2 from a PPA? It's bound to be improved if you are dead set on using Unity

although I am not sure if it will work on 11.10... try and see........ i know it works on 12.04 alpha2........ otherwise you may need to wait until they have a binary package for 11.10

cheers

If you want to stay with Unity, you could also log out and log back in using Unity 2D. Functionally and visually, there isn't that much of a difference.

It all depends where it is slow.. CPU wise, not enough memory, weak graphic laggy performance..
When its memory you could try reduce some services startup options.. CPU wise.. could try a lighter desktop environment.. Graphic card wise.. You could try boot in Unity 2D mode

You can do some tweaking to see all startup programs in the System Settings section and disable some of them, like backup notifier and other stuff. Open up the Terminal and enter these commands (this is for Ubuntu 11.10):

$ cd /etc/xdg/autostart

$ sudo sed --in-place 's/NoDisplay=true/NoDisplay=false/g' *.desktop

You can revert the changes by issuing these commands:

$ cd /etc/xdg/autostart

$ sudo sed --in-place 's/NoDisplay=false/NoDisplay=true/g' *.desktop
