Desktop vs Laptop
This is probably quite an obvious choice to make and most likely resulting with Desktop computers being better but I would like your opinions on whether to get a Desktop computer or laptop for when I start university (I will be doing Open Uni which is distance learning so learning at home). I will have £400 to buy one with roughly and I currently have 1 laptop and a netbook.

I think it depends on whether or not that laptop is crappig out. A laptop is a nice thing to have as a college student because you can take it with you anywhere, which is a nice thing to have. If you plan on having Linux on your new machine then I'd suggest making sure it plays nice with the brand you buy.

Well the laptop has last 3 years of my torment, with only the casing and the first HDD failing which I wanted to upgrade anyway. And yeah I would probably dual boot with Windows 7 (Instead of needing virtual box for some work)

Open learning, cool I did that for a couple years for college.
I guess it might depend on your preferences, I mean sure the desktop could be more bang for your buck but laptops certainly have their advantages too.
The only thing if you're planning to run Linux on it, is really researching the model before hand and making sure it plays nicely. I've heard some nasty stories of Linux making some laptops run continually hot and loud, much shorter battery life etc

I have tried in the past to switch solely to a laptop or desktop. For me they are something I both need.

The stupid thing is at the moment I use my laptop and netbook (I have an ancient desktop) but my laptop which I use mostly is basically a brick without constant power (The battery capacity is 10% of the original capacity or something stupid like that) so I should get a desktop since it never goes anywhere unlike my netbook that I take with me when I need the internet although my mobile can do that now but I like the portability of the laptop.
Which is why I have the dilema.

It's up to you, guy. Most of the brand name laptops run Linux pretty well. If I bought one today, I wouldn't buy anything that doesn't have an Nvidia GPU in it. Personally I have to have a laptop, because my job requires me to be on the road 11 days at a time, so my primary computer workstation is where ever I plopped my ass down at the moment. With the laptop you get portability, but you get less reconfigurability. If a new piece of software comes out, and my GPU for example isn't up to the task, you are SOL , but with a desktop, you can rip the thing out and replace it. If I were in your situation, all ready in possession of a netbook and home every evening, I'd probably go with a desktop, and use the netbook for traveling. Netbooks are great things, but as a primary computer, the just don't cut it.
