Why did you install Arch? Empty Why did you install Arch?

TECHIES, TREKKIES, HACKERS AND SLACKERS!!!!. I would like the Arch users to answer me this Question. Because during my time using Linux (about a year now). I've noticed different reasons why people install Arch they're either a: Say they've completed the Arch install, B: Say "I've got Arch" and then start slagging off another distro and C: They wanted to learn more about Linux. Now I want to be in he latter because i want to know what makes it tick and also to make it mine and be able to maintain it. Also 6 months release cycles bore me rigid. Smile

A few things really. One was curiosity, as with it's growing popularity I'd keep hearing about it and I'm a sucker for Linux challenges.

Another one was speed. Being minimal and customizable from the ground up I knew it was meant to be a lot more responsive than the likes of Ubuntu (unless you decided to bloat it up as well). On top of that is the KISS principal and the simple rc. text files that Arch uses for configuration.

Another one was the ever awesome PACMAN. I heard about it and saw it in action in Arch reviews etc and realised I'd love it. Wink

And yeah, rolling release seemed kinda handy too.

Welcome to the forum btw!

That's the very reasons why I want to install it. I've saw a lot of videos of people changing the config files and it looked easy to do. I also like to go to wikis and forums to find out more about the distro because i think, if you are prepared to do the homework, you'll find the answer, plus I want to really get to know a distro. Thanks Smile

hi LinuxSensei!
Bout time you got your ass here! haha
Welcome to the Forums mate

for me, I use arch because Every Distro out there pisses me off with the choice of default software one way or another..... and makes me think why the fuck did they include this, or do that.... I guess I am picky and see every distro make bad decision choices from my perspective so I picked arch a couple years ago because instead of installing a distro and removing/fixing/adding the things I want to make it work the way I want it.... I can just build my ideal Linux distro from the Base Up with Arch and choose my own settings/defaults

Apart from that I like it's bleeding edge nature, Rolling Release, Awesome Documentation, Huge number of packages, AUR package contributions and Large Community..... And pacman freaking rocks

Cheers!

When I first started using linux I came across arch and looked at it. I figured I probably had no shot at installing it but something inside of me made me want to try. Guess I wanted to get a good feeling of accomplishment should I have succeeded at installing it. It took time and patience but I eventually got it to work. I ended up liking it quite a bit and decided to use it over ubuntu. It was still a bit difficult for me because there was so much I couldn't do, but if I searched in the arch wiki/forums I usually found my answer. I'm still new to linux but I can do a lot more than I could those months ago. I think it was because I decided to challenge myself with a harder distro and I ended up learning a good bit. I also learned a lot with the support of the Linux4UnMe and twil communities helping me with issues I came across. I'm glad I decided to stick with trying to install arch and never gave up. It ended up giving me a lot.
