Sweeeeeet Very Happy

There's some great new features I must say and apparently Kwin gets even more polish and performance improvements. I think I'm gonna totally wipe Gnome 3 off my Arch install and replace it with this once it hits the Arch repos. I'm actually excited lol..

EDIT: Okay I couldnt wait and installed from the Testing repos..lolz. Runs very nice indeed. Still the unfortunate bugginess in the "pinning" of apps/launchers to the panel, but otherwise it's been good so far.

KDE 4.7 released! Empty KDE 4.7 released!

I installed the KDE Edition of PCLinuxOS on my laptop a few weeks and I’ve been more of a KDE fan since. The trouble with Gnome 3 for me is they've done to much to make it different from the last one. Twisted Evil

Yeah, I enjoyed Gnome 3 somewhat for what it is and may become but what Linus Torvalds said about Gnome all those years ago (2005?) rings more true than ever... and that is the Gnome devs tend to do whatever they feel will make the average user "safe" from having too many options and so are known to actually remove functionality to do this. Here's a good little read on the matter http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2005-December/msg00021.html

So I'm loving KDE right now. It's mature and actually gaining some nice functionaliy. Keeping in mind it didn't start that way of course, but kudos to everyone who stuck by it and helped make it what it is.

Not sure about live cd's but hopefully it's in the Arch repos soon.I can see why it's in Testing though, there are a few annoying bugs to iron out.

Yeah I enabled the Testing repo (not sure how different that is to the KDE unstable branch) in Pacman.conf and installed KDE 4.7 as soon as it hit.

Seeing as 4.6 hit the official repos so quickly last time I was hoping this would be the same, but I guess not. The taskbar can be quite buggy, pinning apps and general usage etc, and plasma likes to crash upon logging out/shutting down and a couple other inconsistencies. Otherwise Kwin and the like seem improved and it's pretty good. Hopefully it's fixed up and released to the stable repos soon.

Sweet, look forward to it Smile It's the same version as I was using in Testing so I'm not sure that the bug state will be any different. Though I suspect some of them are also to do with my GTX460. The alt tab cover flow effect for example used to work fine on my ATI card but with this NVIDIA, it hasn't worked since 4.6.2 and still isn't in this one. So I only assume it's my hardware. Oh well.

Nice, I saw it. So yeah, unfortunately it seems one of the more buggier releases in recent times. Can't wait for the next couple updates..

Hmm, for anyone that's using Pulseaudio with KDE (I already had Pulse on my system from my Gnome 3 install) did you have any issues?

I couldn't get FFmpeg to record from my USB headset mic through Pulse once I had installed KDE. Everything else worked okay, except for the slightly choppy notification events sounds which have always been a bit dodgy with Pulse, for me.

It seemed like Phonon was hijacking my mic with Pulseaudio or something, I don't know. Anyway, I removed Pulseaudio from the system, used the asoundconf program (from the AUR) to automatically set up my .asoundrc file to make my headset the default sound card with standalone ALSA...and sure enough, everything is perfect. Now I expected to lose sound mixing...but asoundconf also setup "dmix" in the .asoundrc file and it actually works Shocked

I don't think it ever used to work with my headset. Anyway, it works a treat so I have sound mixing and everything behaving without Pulseaudio. So I'm a happy camper.
