KDE 4.6 Final Release! Empty KDE 4.6 Final Release!

Post  eldersnake Wed Jan 26, 2011 2:35 pm

www.kde.org

How many of you are running 4.6 or are planning to?

I haven't yet, but I'm actually quite excited for it and hope it appears in the Arch Linux updates very soon. Especially as my KDE 4.5.5 knotify component has broke itself and my Window Menubar lol. I'm sure I could fix them but I'm rather just hoping the upgrade + deleting my .kde4 folder will take care of that.

I'm gonna be watching the Arch updates list like a hawk Laughing Don't think I've recently been so excited for a particular free software release.

I've been running Kde 4.6 since RC1 on ArchLinux Wink Living on the edge bahahhahahha

Although now that it is officially released, i'll remove this testing version and reinstall the official stable kde 4.6 and do a review on it. I'm Loving 4.6.... I have
given it a hard time on some videos during the 4.5xx series due to bugs.... Hopefully the stable version of 4.6 is alot better

soon see

i'll post up a review soon

Sweet, can't wait Wink

I was just downloading 4.6..then it needs a dependency which isn't available yet called "grantlee" LOL

So I have to wait just a little longer for that package to come to the mirrors before I can upgrade KDE. Happening to everyone from what I can see on the Arch forum.

EDIT: Lolz there are still a couple major issues even once it's downloaded and installed. You need to run "kde4init" in the terminal after you log in just to get most stuff working. I thought it was just me, but nup, quite a few in the Arch forum have the same issue. At the moment it's a tad broken out of the box pale

Yeah well turns out the segfault issues with kde4init are to do with an out of date "soprano" package in Extras. I downloaded an up to date one on the forums from Google code which has fixed it all for me.

By the time you get a synced Aussie server it should be there as well so hopefully no dramas for you.

I'm in Australia as well but I got desperate and used the overseas mirrors Wink

Post  kaddy Thu Jan 27, 2011 4:16 am

I didn't experience any issues installing kde 4.6 on arch although I did remove the kde testing version I had and installed it from scratch....
I hear there is a minor issue with upgrading from 4.5.5 to 4.6.0, but all good on my end

I will give it a good thrashing over the next couple days to see how stability holds up and post back.........

Awesome. As I was upgrading from 4.5.5 that may be why there were some rough edges for me at first but now it seems to be running fantastic.

Well.. my Smooth-Tasks and Menubar widgets that I had installed from the AUR won't work anymore, but I sort of expected that. I'm not too worried though. I could swear Kwin is indeed a bit faster again.

This is not 4.6 specific I don't think but has anyone noticed how much faster window resizing is if you use one of the standard more simple window decorations? (i.e not Oxygen)

For instance use Plastik or qtcurve (not sure if that's standard with KDE, might be because of the qtcurve theme I installed) but anyway, try one of those over Oxygen or any of the fancy downloadable window decorations and try resizing a typical Dolphin window full of icons. You will see a fair difference I reckon. Usually, at least for me, Oxygen and the downloadable themes are choppy as hell when resizing.

So I'm currently using the Qtcurve window decoration and adjusted that awfully bright default blue decoration colour with my own (KDE's theme colour customization is awesome!). Nothing fancy but nice and smooth so I'm happy.

Okay so this isn't Linux (so shoot me tongue ) but I had an urge to go crazy and install KDE 4.6.0 on my FreeBSD install.

Sure it's only available via SVN and installed the typical Ports source way and it took literally all night and morning to build and install the thing and there were a couple of bugs/build errors I had to try and force it around... but it runs like a dream Shocked And somehow it's only using 178MB's of RAM as I type this in my Opera browser, which is incredible for KDE. It could be because Nepomuk (?)/Akonadi isn't functioning yet, but I always turn that off anyway so meh..

Well i did end up trying KDE 4.6, and it's not for me. It looks nice but somehow feels for want of a better term "artificial". It's like acrylic pretending to be glass.

I used to feel that way about KDE too; I sort of use to think it also felt kind of plastic and "cold", not very inviting etc. I'm not sure what changed me, but I grew to love it.

Still, it's definitely not for everyone. Not everyone wants the glitter and eye candy distracting them from work etc.

KDE 4.6 Final Release! Empty Re: KDE 4.6 Final Release!

So I noticed there was an update to KDE on Arch today (4.6.1).

As it's only a minor update I didn't expect to notice much difference at least in terms of general usage, but interestingly it now seems KDE is using a good 100+mb LESS ram.

Am I the only one or has the update lowered ram usage?

I tested your findings today before and after my update to 4.6.1,
and Yes, you are right. My Desktop is using close to 100mb less ram now.

wow, pretty cool. Although I have not seen any mention of this in the 4.6.1 announcement.... but it's definately using less ram Cool

Ahhh, cheers. That is very cool.

Good on them I say, with multiple gb's of RAM it was never really a problem but any optimizations like this they can do are most welcome and nice I reckon. Surprised they didn't put it in the release notes actually.
