EXDE - Gnome 2 fork Empty EXDE - Gnome 2 fork

http://www.exde.org

Well I think we all expected this Wink

I found this when someone mentioned it on the Fedora forums.
I don't know if any part of it actually exists yet.. it was only founded in late January this year haha, but I like the sound of their goal(s) myself. It could be a much better and more standardised and less buggy version of the Gnome 2 we know today if it goes as their vision suggests. Will probably pick up a lot of the Gnome refugees (those who despise the new Gnome..) so to speak too.

So, thoughts or anything? It's worth reading over their whole FAQ and roadmap.

Good to see that project happening. I think the gnome developers are shooting themselves in the foot with the whole gnome shell thing.

I agree and while I don't doubt there will be people who will like Gnome-Shell I feel that it's gonna be the minority rather than the majority and Gnome as it is, has quite a large following as you would know. Gnome 3/Shell seems like something that would better suit touch screens and the like, so maybe sometime in the future (if that's the way we go *groan*) it would get received better but for now and the near future, I personally think the traditional way is better and I appreciate the likes of KDE and this upcoming EXDE project.

Well that worked out well.. Rolling Eyes

Guess it wasn't to be, anyone know more specifically what might have happened? I'm guessing just lack of interest and time on the devs part but I dunno. It happens though I suppose.

Yeah it sucks but I guess it's wasn't too unexpected. Beauty of open source though, someone, anyone could and most will likely come along and do the fork..

As for LXDE, I am becoming a bit of a fan of it. So damn lightweight and fast but so usable as well. This might sound sacrilegious Wink but it reminds me of a fresh Windows XP install on a modern computer.. fast and lightweight interface but perfectly standard and usable. XFCE is nice but I can never keep it.. it's like it tries so hard to be Gnome sometimes and I find bits of it to be quite inconsistent. Great built in compositing though.

I have taken a liking to LXDE lately too. Very Minimalistic and Light/responsive. This is probably their chance to Shine since Gnome 3 is drastically changing.......

Next weekend I suppose I'll try the Gnome 3 on a USB stick. I guess I can't judge it before I try it. I've tried Unity, and think it's a complete disaster. I'm wondering what approach will Linux Mint take..stick with the old Gnome, modify Gnome 3, or abandon the Gnome version all together?

Clem from LinuxMint has already dicussed this.... They are moving to Gnome 3 "Without" Gnome-shell. Gnome 3 and Gnome-shell are 2 seperate projects put together to make Gnome 3.... so mint will still be using gnome-panel with their customisations with gnome 3

A time will come when they'll have to go with gnome 3, unity, or their own thing. Hopefully they come up with something that's actually good. that is of course if anyone does not decide to pick up gnome 2.

I have tried LXDE lately and I like it a lot. It seems a bit unstable at times . . . my logout button will disappear or something and there is no obvious way to get it back, so have been trying out idesk and fluxbox and am sort of growing into them. I wanted to like Gnome 3 but I just couldn't swing it. Ubuntu's Unity is even worse for me, though some people seem to dig it. Anyway, such is life.

I actually like unity. I think I might be the only person here who does. I switched to openbox shortly before the release of natty and liked it. I was going to switch to lxde but decided to see how I'd like building up openbox. I ended up enjoying it a lot.

I actually like docky quite a bit so using unity is like using docky. It works quite well with the desktop and everything on it is hotkeyed. That allows me to bring up the apps menu or my files and folders real fast.

Hello, everyone.
I dislike Gnome shell, but I'm not sure I would want yet another fork of an existing DE, such as a Gnome 'Classic.' I think it would be worthwhile to learn to get around in Xfce (it's what I'm doing) or to use LXDE, which I have never found to be buggy, personally. (There is something that bugs me about it, though: Could you ever in your life come up with a more ugly logo than that big parsnip or ginseng root they've got going on for 'X' -???)

Pardon me for not having done my homework [-visions of teaming hordes of villagers sporting pitchforks and torches to storm the castle, shouting "Nooby error! Nooooooby! you've been in forums for years why don't you learn, you wretch!..."-] but what, if any, is the relationship of Ubuntu's Unity to the Gnome shell?

If you will give me just a moment before you answer, I think I have a kevlar vest I can don over here...

Haha, no pitchforks here mate and welcome to the forum Wink

As far as I'm aware, there is no direct relation between Unity and Gnome-Shell. The only thing they have in common is they are Gnome, or at least Unity is a fork of Gnome.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but Unity is still using GTK2 (Gnome 2.32) while Gnome-Shell is the latest Gnome 3 (GTK3 toolkit). Unity is just a refined and more developed version of Ubuntu's Unity "netbook" interface and made more compatible with day to day desktop PC use. Gnome-Shell is the Gnome foundation's new baby (though has been in development quite a while) which is based upon 'Mutter' for it's effects etc while Unity uses Compiz.

It's all personal preference which one you find best, but (and this probably makes me a bit of a hypocrite based on some of my original comments ahaha) I've recently started to really like Gnome-Shell. It's more limiting than most at the moment obviously, but apparently Gnome 2 was much the same when it first came out a decade or so ago. Given time I'm sure Gnome 3/Shell will become much more feature filled and at the moment I'm happy with the customizations I have made even if they aren't as easy to do as they should be.
I'm admittedly not such a fan of Unity but I can see why some people might like it.

Post  kaddy Fri May 13, 2011 3:17 am

haha I bring out the pitchfork only on Youtube when I get fkn troll comments.... Evil or Very Mad Smile

Yeah Unity is based on Gtk2 at the moment but I know that the next version "apparently" will be ported to Gnome 3 / gtk 3

Unity and Gnome-shell are quite different in Design.... but Both having a dock style bar on the left I suppose makes them look similiar "sortof" But they both
behave very differently

and yer... unity uses compiz while gnome-shell uses mutter...... I wish gnome-shell used compiz instead.... but ahwell... runs smooth anyways. Just a lack of effects which may take a while to start being implemented......

And as eldersnake said.... It is pretty much personal preference between the two. I have raged at Gnome 3 / Gnome-shell and Unity quite a bit.... And I still think They are both a disappointment... Although I have been using Gnome 3 / Gnome-shell as default for a week or so now and I am actually enjoying it a little more now...... I still stand by my past comments about it not being worthy of a 3.0 release and featureless.... But I know that over the next couple years it will really improve and start to mature.... I'de use Gnome 3 over Unity anyday.... I dunno what it is about unity... it just irritates me... I think it is because of the fact that it is a half baked Osx ripoff that annoys me.... Gnome-shell, to me, seems to be something New that didn't really copy any ideas from anyone but was designed and implemented from original ideas.... And Gnome 3.2 is currently in the making and there is some nice new features coming

Yeah kinda how I feel on the design perspective. Unity feels like an OSX rip off with some issues and Gnome-Shell actually seems to have had real study and proper designers working on it, even if it's not complete yet. Their "design" page on the live.gnome site is a decent read, if a little outdated.

The upcoming features looks promising too. I remember it wasn't long ago a lot us were saying Gnome was getting old and not really going anywhere but at least now it's all new and the potential is there.
