PPA support for CrunchBang Linux and also LMDE!!! Explained!!! Empty PPA support for CrunchBang Linux and also LMDE!!! Explained!!!

Kaddy had questioned my comments made on the LMDE review on Youtube about PPA support for CrunchBang Linux and also LMDE.
I thought I would clarify my comments on this forum Kaddy has provided us as you can post links here.

http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=23958

If you go to the link above, you will see the PPA support instructions for how to install NETFLIX for Crunchbang linux.
These exact same instructions work perfectly in LMDE!!! And you can also use other PPA for some things offered in Ubuntu this way.

Now! This provides Clem with a bridge to PPA native for LMDE which works! If we do break away from Ubuntu for Linux Mint, we will
still have PPA support!

I'm using this on my CrunchBang install right now and it works great! It also works on my other computer which has LMDE installed!
Just so you know, CrunchBang Linux and also LMDE are what I would call enhanced Debian based distro's.

Cheers for the post...

At the end of the day... even this PPA you have posted about is for Ubuntu... but as with any PPA... you can still (with workarounds) make an Ubuntu PPA work on a Debian/Debian based System... a lot of people do it.. the Debian boys "recommend" to not do it as it may affect the stability of their Debian System.. but if you accept the risks... you are free to do it Smile

I WISH that Debian had native PPA support... but as far as I know they don't... there have been attempts at it .... eg: debppa is one that comes to mind... but it never took off

I wonder if Clem will rebase on Lmde in future now that Ubuntu are moving to their own package format... hmmmmmm C'MON CLEM!

Well, yes your right. In fact, when they change the package format in Ubuntu then definitely this ppa hack will never work and it will all be worthless. A depressing fact...

I don't know. They added PPA support to Crunchbang and also LMDE and people are using it right now. I am.
And you mentioned debppa. But really, with the current PPA format, it's up to the PPA provider to make the entry in their repos for Wheezy or Crunchbang or LMDE and they can provide the right package and the right script and this would work just fine now! The problem is they don't bother to support it. They only want to support Ubuntu.
And since Ubuntu is changing their package format, the idea of sharing the PPA system the FOSS way has turned to total shit!!! Total shit!!!

OpenSuse offers the build service. But that won't get you updates.

Will there EVER be a universal PPA system that everyone can use and is widely supported?? Perhaps not.

Clem should move everything over to LMDE and I still say he should beef it up to a SIDUCTION or APTOSID type environment. LMDE really should be the STAR attraction.

So, Clem will fight MIR, he will fight the package change-over..... How much bullshit can this guy fight?
