Post  kd5ob Sun Aug 04, 2013 12:04 pm

I enjoyed the informal video and agree with just about everything said and wanted to just add a couple of things..

$800 is about what you need to contribute to get into this crowdfunded Ubuntu Edge phone project.
And $800 takes most lad's about 3 months to scrap up but, they can do it.
Shuttleworths first mistake was to limit the campaign to just 30 days for 32 million dollars. A blaringly obvious mistake..
You guy's laughed at $32 million ... Right,,,

Well, before this ends he's going to have about $13 million dollars in there to grab. And you can bet that Shuttleworth will not back out now.
He's committed to do this. If he doesn't then he's going to never get this thing off the ground. It will never happen.
So, he will bail it out.

You have to remember that he whole point of the crowdfunding was to prove to the manufacturers that there are serious ubuntu users
out there who want to buy a phone. And they probably figure that about 10% of the people will show up for this event and thus they will have
their proof of market.

Notice, that currently about 14,000 people are listed in there as contributing the current $8 million dollars. And it was estimated that there
are about 4,000,000 ubuntu users worldwide.

So, he will follow through and bail out this project on the last day.
And where he's going to get it in the shorts is April of 2014. He better have a very good phone for these people to use.
If the crowd approves then he's in. And the rest of the puzzle you guy's talked about will happen over time with the apps..

Remember also that when you plug in the phone to the monitor, your running the FULL UBUNTU DESKTOP,,, NOT the one when running mobile.
Which means I can do anything on that I do on my laptop. I can run XFCE or KDE IF they port those over to mir...
I can access usb storage and a NAS or CLOUD system. I can use my bluetooth mouse and keyboard. And the thing is certainly more
portable than a laptop for those of us who ride Harley Davidsons to work.

You guy's need to keep in mind, the rasberry pi is selling well and it's even less capable..

So, I've put in for it at the $775 level. And we'll sit back an see

Post  kaddy Sun Aug 04, 2013 12:30 pm

g'day mate, cheers for the post

According to the Ubuntu Edge Funding Campaign Website  http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge
Canonical has stated the following :

What if you fail to reach the funding target?

We appreciate every bit of support we receive during the 30 days, and every backer will be welcomed into the Ubuntu community. If we don’t reach our target then we will focus only on commercially available handsets and there will not be an Ubuntu Edge. All contributions will be fully refunded.

So I'm not so sure if Mark will bail out the Ubuntu Edge if funding fails... it certainly would not show manufacturers that there is enough interest in Ubuntu since the owner of Canonical had to pay the majority in the remaining balance owed when the 30 days has ended... and I don't think Mark would be willing to invest that much money when he isn't going to get his money back.... that is a bad business decision.... he is in it to make money, not lose it... So I disagree with your statement about Mark will bail it out on the last day but only time will tell.... Wink

Yes, the Rasberry Pi is selling well because it is so damn cheap and it's modifications seem endless.... a geeks fantasy to use their imagination and build all sorts of cool shit with the Pi. I'm buying one myself Wink

Yes I know it docks to a full Desktop Ubuntu Os, but it would be laggy at best even on those specs when multitasking with Desktop Apps IMO, but we'll see.... btw, no you won't be able to run Xfce, Kde any time soon on Ubuntu in future... Kde has already refused support for Mir patches and it will be a longgggg time before Xfce port to gtk3 which btw, will have full Wayland support.... Mir? I am not so sure about...

cheers m8

kaddy

btw.... is that a pic of you or just a random pic? Razz

And if he doesn't, then no manufacturer will even both.. There not going to gamble on this as they already have Android..
So, he has to. I don't care what the web page said. That's just a pep talk for more people to get them to dump in more money...
If he doesn't bail this program out for his 30 day mistake, then there will NEVER be a mobile Ubuntu..

And if that IS the case, then as to the future of Ubuntu, I'd say the entire smack is totally dead at that point.
Totally, and utterly DEAD....

So, fuck yeah he'll bail it out. I'll bet you now Kaddy...

If he doesn't bail out and the refund is made, then you can just forget about trying that again with anybody.
He's doing this because he doesn't have proof of market concept...

If your right, and it doesn't make a good proof of market, and frankly Kaddy,,,, why else do this?? Because he's a good guy????

If this doesn't come through than the good ship Ubuntu is going to sink within one year....

I'll spot you $20 that Edge will be bailed out.

And if it's not, $20 again that they won't find a commercial market OUT if this isn't bailed,,, I'll give you one year,, say 12.2014...
Agreed?

Otherwise Kaddy,,,, the entire damn thing is idiotic.
He's already been to the manufacturers and they've said shove...
Nobody want's to get sued by Google or Apple or get into some kind of NDA like war....

So, he comes up with this skeme, dreams up this super phone, 8 cores, 4 gigs of memory 128 gigs storage,
desktop upon plugin... That's the ticket man....

In the evenings here in the wild west, in the planes of America, the breadbasket,,, I sit on my front porch with me beer
and I have a smoke. And you can always hear the animal who's just got cornered by the coyote.
Sometimes, it's a family's dog sreaming. Sometimes, you hear nothing because it's a deer.

But you can always hear the call of death...

let me know if you agree to this bet..

The second bet is, tablet or phone, no ubuntu commercial pickup by 12.2014.
NO COMMERICAL MOBILE DEVICE AT ALL WITH UBUNTU INSTALLED FOR SALE... Contract phone or otherwise. Walmart blisterpak or otherwise,,,,
$20....

He'd already be on a commercial deal with some manufacturer, hooked up with Sprint or AT&T already if he could.
This is the reason he's doing this Kaddy..... This is the reason....

Ubuntu Edge now $695, thanks to major industry backing

With 14 days to go, it’s time for our biggest announcement yet. From now until the end of the campaign, we’re fixing the price of the Ubuntu Edge at $695! No limited quantities, no more price changes. You wanted a more affordable Edge, and now you’ve got it.

How are we able to do this? Mainly thanks to all of you. The huge support the Ubuntu Edge has been receiving from all corners of the world has really sent a message to the mobile industry -- and that message has been received loud and clear.

Yesterday we announced that Bloomberg LP has snapped up the first of the $80,000 Enterprise bundles, and we expect more businesses to follow suit. To make it even more appealing, we’ve raised the number of phones included in the bundle from 100 to 115.

Even better, since the campaign started breaking records on day one, we’ve been negotiating with several major component suppliers who are keen to see the Edge reach its goal and drive the adoption of new mobile technologies. This is one of the key benefits of keeping some of the core specifications open: as a result of these negotiations, we can now produce the same state-of-the-art device for less than we originally estimated.

Edge for less

So of course we’re passing those savings on to you. There’s now a single unlimited $695 Ubuntu Edge perk, which comes with a year’s subscription to LastPass Premium and a place on the Founders page. At the end of the campaign, anyone who’s already pledged more than $695 for the phone will be offered a refund of the difference.

There will be no further price reductions, and we must reiterate that the Ubuntu Edge is exclusive to Indiegogo. It will not be available to buy anywhere outside of this campaign, even at launch.

The target is still $32 million, so we will need to ship a few more phones at $695 than we would at a higher price, but we believe we can do it. We have two weeks, and we have the best community out there, so let’s get to work: share this news, get the word out, and let’s get the Ubuntu Edge made!

yeah I read that today.... I still don't see the Edge getting 32 Million UNLESS big Companies put in or Marky Mark bails it out.... We'll see...

Don't forget, I only lose the bet if Mark Shuttleworth bails it out.... not if the Edge actually reaches it's goals via other funding Wink
Watching closely.... Smile

Fair enough, Fair enough.. sure.

Even at $80,000 pops like this, it's a very long way to $32 million...

Just the fact he adjusted the price here indicates to me even further, he's going to bail it.
He want's it bad...

Translation,,, "yeah, I'll take $10 million dollars but, it would be better if I could have $20 million.

Still sounds to me like their going to build the Edge anyway.

******************************************************************************************************
A message from Mark Shuttleworth

Hi everyone

Thanks in large part to all of you, the Ubuntu Edge campaign response has been incredible. In just over three weeks more than 20,000 people have backed the project, from individuals giving a single dollar right up to Bloomberg’s fantastic $80,000 contribution. Along the way we’ve broken crowdfunding records, including the fastest project to hit $2 million (7hrs 59mins), and the highest ever 24-hour total ($3.45 million). We’re now on the verge of an even bigger milestone as we approach the all-time crowdfunding record of $10.27 million.

Speaking both personally and for the team, the more time we spend on this project, the more excited we get about the possibilities of this new class of device. And as the news has spread we’ve seen industry thought leaders coming round to the idea that convergence can be a real force, and that this project represents a new way to underwrite innovation.

That led to some significant engagements with suppliers that enabled us to drop the price below $700, without compromising the specification. And now that we’ve seen next-generation phones from other major names, we think the price-performance of the Edge is off the charts -- it offers real value. We’re even more convinced that it will take a new approach to unlock the next wave of mobile innovation.

Whatever happens in the next nine days, the Ubuntu Edge is already making a difference. This campaign lets enthusiast consumers signal their interest to a mobile industry that caters overwhelmingly to the mainstream. It’s making it clear that we’re no longer satisfied with minor updates; we’re looking for true innovation and we’re ready to pay for it. And that message is getting through.

So in a sense, we can be proud of what’s been achieved already -- but we really want to hit that $32 million! We’re going to need a huge push, a surge in awareness that builds momentum to carry us over the line. No one here is giving up while the goal remains achievable, and you’ve all gone out of your way to add your voice to the chorus. So I’m writing to ask you to take to the Twitterverse and other social networks to encourage like-minded types to join you, and me, and companies large and small, in backing the Ubuntu Edge.

As they say, the future is already here, it’s just not widely distributed. We’re working to put it in the hands of 40,000 people, to start a revolution. And you’re there at the start.

The Ubuntu Edge video Empty 08/16 for the record

Post  kd5ob Fri Aug 16, 2013 5:58 am

Ubuntu Edge enters the record books!

Hi everyone

The big record has been broken!

This morning the Ubuntu Edge passed the $10,266,845 raised by the Pebble smartwatch to become the world’s biggest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign. Over 14,500 Ubuntu Edges have been pledged for -- and there’s still just under a week left to add to that total.

It’s a fantastic achievement and you’ve all played your part, so thank you!

The top contributing nations

1. United States
2. United Kingdom
3. Germany
4. Canada
5. Australia
6. Netherlands
7. Sweden
8. France
9. Switzerland
10. Norway

NEW: Enterprise Starter Kit

We’ve added a new perk for smaller businesses looking to back the Ubuntu Edge. The Enterprise Starter Kit gets you 10 phones, along with access to an online workshop and 14 days of online support, for $7,000.

Support the Thunderclap

It’s important that we all keep sharing the campaign, and one of our Ubuntu Edge contributors has set up a Thunderclap. It co-ordinates a large group of social media users to all spread a message at exactly the same time for maximum effect. It’s all automated, so it would be great if as many of you as possible could support the Ubuntu Edge Thunderclap.

The Ubuntu Edge video Empty Whoever Stephen Fry is..

Post  kd5ob Tue Aug 20, 2013 10:34 am

Hi everyone

We’re into the last 48 hours! You’ve all been fantastic, keeping the conversation going from the initial launch rush right through to this final push.

In the last few days we’ve had the Thunderclap, which co-ordinated 1,848 tweets and Facebook posts about the Edge to go out simultaneously to your hundreds of thousands of people.

CNET UK went hands-on with the Edge and Ubuntu for Android here in the Canonical offices, coming away with a very positive impression.

And we got an unexpected boost from Ubuntu user Stephen Fry, who pledged for an Edge and urged his 6 million Twitter followers to do the same. Thanks Stephen!

There’s still time to get involved, so let’s give it one final push and see how much we can add to that amazing total.
Keep sharing!

Canonical posted an announcement 2 hours ago

Hi everyone

So ends a crazy month. We’ve broken records, we’ve been written and talked about across the world, we’ve worn out our F5 keys, and we’ve learned a lot of invaluable lessons about crowdfunding. Our bold campaign to build a visionary new device ultimately fell short, but we can take away so many positives.

We raised $12,809,906, making the Edge the world’s biggest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign. Let’s not lose sight of what an achievement that is. Close to 20,000 people believed in our vision enough to contribute hundreds of dollars for a phone months in advance, just to help make it happen. It wasn’t just individuals, either: Bloomberg LP gave $80,000 and several smaller businesses contributed $7,000 each. Thank you all for getting behind us.

Then there’s the Ubuntu community. Many of you gave your time as well as money, organising your own mailing lists, social media strategies and online ads, and successfully reaching out to your local media. We even saw entire sites created to gather information and help promote the Edge. We’ll be contacting our biggest referrers personally.

Most importantly, the big winner from this campaign is Ubuntu. While we passionately wanted to build the Edge to showcase Ubuntu on phones, the support and attention it received will still be a huge boost as other Ubuntu phones start to arrive in 2014. Thousands of you clearly want to own an Ubuntu phone and believe in our vision of convergence, and rest assured you won’t have much longer to wait.

All of the support and publicity has continued to drive our discussions with some major manufacturers, and we have many of the world’s biggest mobile networks already signed up to the Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group. They’ll have been watching this global discussion of Ubuntu and the need for innovation very closely indeed. Watch this space!

As for crowdfunding, we believe it’s a great way to give consumers a voice and to push for more innovation and transparency in the mobile industry. And who knows, perhaps one day we’ll take everything we’ve learned from this campaign -- achievements and mistakes -- and try it all over again.

Thank you all

Mark Shuttleworth, the Ubuntu Edge team and everyone at Canonical

P.S. We’ve been assured by Paypal that all refunds will be processed within five working days.

haha It's all good Charlie, I wasn't planning on taking the $20. \
The validation alone is enough for me... I couldn't see Mark investing so much money just so that
Ubuntu enthusiasts could have an Ubuntu edge phone.... there is no return on his investment.... that would be a retarded business
decision to make.... Laughing

Oh well... there will still be Ubuntu mobiles in future, low to mid range... I'de buy one for $200 Wink

The Ubuntu Edge video Empty The $20``

Post  kd5ob Fri Aug 23, 2013 8:19 am

Hey, I'm not worried about the money. But, if you do send you address, when i get home from Atlanta, i will go up
and get you and your wife Route 66 T Shirts and a card and send that then. It's up to you. Route 66 is just as cool as Perth...

Well, about Shuttleworth. You say to have taken the $12k and have built the phone anyway would have been a bad decision
and he avoids bad decisions... And to that comment Sir Kaddy, i'd have to say,, "Have you watched any of your own reviews of other famous
Mark Shuttleworth decisions recently?"... ha ha...

At any rate, it did prove he had some interest from some people in Ubuntu phone.
And even though I put money into this project, I still believe that it's going to be a very hard battle to get into the Mobile market for Shuttleworth and Ubuntu.
if you've noticed, even the 2 people up on the Linux Action show who fed us a constant stream of ubuntu are now saying basically what you've said, that
Android phones are better and they'd never use a Ubuntu phone. Their even suggesting their major advertising vendor switch using Ubuntu on their machines they sell to something else. And that's even more strange...

Oh well, it's over. The only exciting thing I've gotten out of this was installing Elementary OS Luna.

bye Kaddy,
